Summer league swimming is a major highlight of any child’s summer. Who wouldn’t enjoy all of the friends, new games, and just loads of fun racing in the sun? Well unfortunately, there are many kids that continue to become less and less interested in the swimming aspect, and more interested in socializing elsewhere. As soon as swimming becomes “uncool” to those specific age groups, you will start to see the numbers drop on your swim teams : ( .
Yes, growing up and maturing is inevitable (unfortunately), but that does not mean that you have to move on from summer league swimming completely! Summer swimming has many benefits, even as you begin your teenage years.
Here are 4 reasons why you should continue summer swimming.
1. Its fun
Ok, so maybe the theme nights and costume contests may not be as fun as they once were, but there are still so many reasons why summer swimming is still fun. Hanging out with your close childhood friends will never get old, and joking around with the summer league coaches will never get boring. And most importantly, no matter what age you are, sharks and minnows during practice will always be an absolute blast.
2. It’s great exercise
We all know that exercise is very important for kids. Luckily, swimming is one of the best exercises out there. What better way to tire the kids than by dropping them off at the pool for an hour long practice!? Swimming is unlike any other form of exercise because not only is it great cardio, but it also provides excellent stretching for your body, has zero impact on your joints, and works out every muscle in the body! No matter how old you are getting, you still need to exercise, and a swim workout is second to none!
3. You get an awesome tan
Duh! Everyone needs a little Vitamin D. Summer swimming just so happens to provide that awesome tan you can take back to school. Who doesn’t love an awesome tan to show off? Just don’t forget the sunscreen!
4. The competition
A little competition is good for anyone, and summer league swimming is certainly filled with it. There are not many other activities or hobbies that offer the unique type of competition that summer swimming does. One race you are up against your friends and teammate, and the next you are on a relay with all of those same people! Whether you are 8 or 18, summer swimming will always provide the best type of competition. And don’t forget, racing is fun!
As you begin to move into your teenage years, and you start to feel “too old” for certain things you once loved, it is important to remember all of the positives in summer swimming and not necessarily what other people will think about you if you participate. Sure, there will be parts of the summer swimming experience that you will grow out of, but all of the great experiences, the fun competition, and the great exercise that come from it will be important learning experiences as you grow older. Oh, and don’t forget the awesome tan! So, before you decide to hang up the suit and goggles for good, think about why you (or your kids) really and truly want to move on.
