Millions of kids across the country spend their summers in pools competing in summer league swimming. It’s a great place to make friends, exert wound up energy, and will become the grass roots of learning dedication, hard work, and goal setting. While parents may love and appreciate the break they get when their kids are dropped at the pool, those days will come to an end as the swim meet season kicks off. Unfortunately, their commitment to our sport often goes unnoticed and unappreciated. Well, we certainly couldn’t do any of it without them; here are 3 reasons why swim parents are so important:
1. Kids Would be Lost
The kids may be the ones who put on the swim suit, cap, and goggles, but the parents are doing just as much work on the preparation side. They wake their kids up every morning when they feel like sleeping in, they drive them to practice and sit on the hot deck watching them swim back and forth, and they even post-pone their daily errands when begged, “Just thirty more minutes, Mom! Please!” Without them, hundreds of kids would show up to the pools without their racing gear and towels. Let’s be honest, packing a swim bag is not a priority for the young ones. Not to mention, the parents are exceptional about making sure the right snacks and drinks are packed to ensure a healthy lifestyle and the best results!
2. Parents Make the Swim Meet Experience
At swim meets, parents don’t usually get to sit back and relax. In fact, swim meets would be impossible without parent-volunteers. Parents are the ones who bravely sign up to time those treacherous swim meets knowing that they will sweat for hours and end the day in soaking wet shoes. They have the super power of taming hundreds of kids and making sure they are behind their correct lanes before their races. Hours are spent before, during, and after swim meets to set up, tear down, and clean up. Amazingly, they do all of this while simultaneously watching and cheering on the swimmers!
3. Our #1 Fans, Our Biggest Supporters, and OurLoudest Cheerleaders
Swim parent are the first ones to give hugs and high-fives when their kids succeed, and the first ones to say, “It’s okay! You’ll get it next time,” when their goals aren’t met. Even though parents can be embarrassing at times as they jump up and down screaming during races, it is secretly appreciated (but don’t count on the kids ever admitting that). They know best times, favorite events, and aren’t shy about telling their parent-friends how proud they are. Parents turn disappointments into learning experiences and DQ’s into trips to get ice cream (DQ stands for Dairy Queen, right?). Without them, kids wouldn’t learn the importance of hard work and perseverance, and that anything is possible. The very best part about our own swim parents… They will never stop believing in us!
So THANK YOU SWIM PARENTS, for getting up before the sun rises to drive us to practice, for hosting pasta parties and team movie nights, and for always inspiring us when we are discouraged and tired. Thank you for investing your time, energy, and money (hey, swim suits aren’t cheap) into the sport we love. We wouldn’t be the swimmers we are today without you!
Meet Central™ is the #1 APP in the country that runs summer swim meets developed by Gold Medal Olympian Charlie Houchin right here in the Triangle. Meet Central™ uses the popularity of mobile devices to run summer swim meets in less time, with fewer volunteers and with much less paper complexity. We have completed two successful summers with swim teams now in 15 states and 3 countries using Meet Central™ and we are already taking orders for summer 2016, http://www.hydroxphere.com/ . We are getting ready to release Version 3.0 with a lot of enhancements for summer 2016 and looking to make contact with summer swim leagues that want to run more efficient swim meets and don’t use touch pads.
